Our Company

Dexter Apache Holdings, Inc. is a leading 100% employee owned company with diverse business interests in the manufacturing, distribution and financial services industries. Headquartered in Fairfield, Iowa with over 750 employees, Dexter Apache Holdings and its predecessor, The Dexter Company, have a rich heritage for delivering high quality, innovative products and services to our customers and business partners. Our ownership culture empowers employee owners,

creating a highly efficient, service oriented company that is committed to excellence.

The Dexter Apache legacy began with an ambitious young inventor named W.H. George. In the late 1800's as washing machines began to gain popularity, Mr. George decided that he could improve on the existing designs and capabilities. He began building several hand-powered washer models and the business grew quickly in size and prestige. The Dexter Company was formed in 1894 and shortly began manufacturing wringer washers.

The Dexter Company acquired its name from Dexter, a world champion race horse. The horse was the model for weather vanes seen on top of barns across the country and the subject of a famous Currier and Ives painting depicting President Grant riding Dexter. Dexter's earliest hand and foot powered washers were made of wood slats bound together with metal bands. Names of some of the models were the "Monarch" and the "Billy Twister". In the early days, some models sold for as little as $15. Later on, washing machines were powered by belts, steam, gas or electricity and had enamel tubs made of copper, zinc, and porcelain.

In 1912, when the business operations outgrew the original factory, the company was relocated to Fairfield, Iowa where company headquarters and manufacturing operations remain to this day. Since that time, manufacturing operations have expanded beyond laundry to include foundry operations, financing and distribution channels.

In 1987, The Dexter Company transitioned to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) structure and is now 100% employee-owned. Our ownership culture empowers employee-owners, thereby creating a highly productive, innovative, consistent, and service-oriented company. In the fall of 2006, Dexter expanded operations further through the acquisition of Apache Stainless and its manufacturing of steel and high alloy fabricated products. At this time The Dexter Company was also renamed to Dexter Apache Holdings, Inc.
